In this guide we will teach you how to configure your email account in mail clients such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or on mobile devices. Before starting, make sure that you have created a corporate email account by following these steps: How to Create an Email Account in cPanel.
What are the connection protocols SMTP, POP3, and IMAP?
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol): SMTP is the protocol used to send emails from your mail client to the outgoing mail server. In short, it is the protocol in charge of sending your messages.
POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3): POP3 is the protocol used to download emails from the incoming mail server to your mail client. It is useful if you want to store your emails on your device.
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol): IMAP is also used to receive emails, but unlike POP3, the emails remain on the server. This allows you to access your emails from multiple devices and keep them synchronized.
Connection Security
To guarantee the security of your emails, it is important to understand the security options available when configuring your mail client. In this context, it is crucial to differentiate between two common security protocols: SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and TLS (Transport Layer Security).
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer): SSL is an older security protocol but still effective. You can use it if your mail client supports it, but it is strongly recommended to use TLS if possible, since it is more secure.
TLS (Transport Layer Security): TLS is an evolution of SSL and is considered more secure. You should prefer this option.
Obtaining Configuration Data from cPanel
Before proceeding with the configuration of your mail client, we require the necessary information for your email client, which you can obtain from your cPanel control panel. Go to the ‘Email Accounts’ section and, to access the specific details, look for and click on the ‘Connect Devices’ button.
DNS (Name Servers):
It is essential to ensure that your domain is configured with our DNS so that the connection of your subdomain ‘mail.yourdomain.com’ works efficiently together with your Sered hosting services. To obtain detailed information about our Sered DNS, we suggest consulting the specific guide: ‘What are the DNS of Sered.net’.
Following the pattern established in the previous cPanel images, your mail client will need the following information:
Incoming and Outgoing Server:
We always recommend that you use our Sered DNS to guarantee optimal performance. However, in case you do not have our DNS configured on your domain, other options are available. For example, you can use the cPanel domain name shown in your browser, such as ‘host.cpseXX.eu’, to establish a direct connection with the server. Likewise, you have the option of using the server’s IP address, which is available on the right-hand side of your cPanel control panel. Both alternatives allow you to access and connect to the server from your mail client, although the choice between them will depend on your preferences and specific needs.
Secure Connection Configuration with SSL/TLS (Recommended)
To enable the secure port with SSL/TLS, it is essential that you have an SSL certificate installed on your domain. You can follow the detailed steps in this guide to activate an SSL certificate from cPanel: ‘How to Activate an SSL Certificate from cPanel’. If you are using the IP or hosting name, for example: "host.cpseXX.eu", it will not be necessary to perform the SSL installation.
Incoming Ports:
IMAP Port: 993
POP3 Port: 995
Outgoing Port:
SMTP Port: 465
Connection Configuration without SSL (NOT recommended)
Incoming Ports:
IMAP Port: 143
POP3 Port: 110
Outgoing Port:
SMTP Port: 587
It is important to highlight that the secure connection with SSL/TLS is strongly recommended to protect your emails and ensure the security of your information.
Authentication
To guarantee optimal functioning of the email, it is essential to enable authentication. The IMAP, POP3, and SMTP protocols require authentication as a security measure to confirm your legitimate access to your email account.
Once you have created your corporate email account by following the steps mentioned above and you have this information, you will be able to configure your mail client by following the detailed instructions in this guide. This will allow you to send and receive emails securely and efficiently.
There are various online tools available to verify the functioning of the data, such as the SMTP test tool that you can find below: ‘Test Email Server’.
