How to Change the WordPress Login URL

Updated over 3 months ago

WordPress has a back office that allows us to make primary changes to the site. Of course, this back office is secured with a username and a login page to keep it 100% safe. This area, where we enter our credentials, is called the access zone or login page.

Why change the WordPress login URL?

Security is an essential aspect to take into account, especially when dealing with a site built with WordPress. It is important to keep in mind certain approaches to withstand hacker attacks and keep all our work safe.

This time we are going to talk about another security measure that allows us to prevent malware attackers from accessing our website’s login and therefore the backoffice. It is not the method of the century, however, it will make these hackers much less problematic.

Also, as a result, we are looking to change the WordPress login address. Of course, to enter the WordPress administration we need to type in the address bar http://mysite.com/wp-login.php or http://mysite.com/wp-admin

This is the same for all WordPress sites in the world, so if we change this entry URL to our WordPress panel, we will be further strengthening the security of our site.

Changing the WordPress Login URL

The first thing we need to do is install and configure the WPS Hide Login plugin. We go to the Plugins area of the WordPress backoffice and select the Add New option.

On the Add New Plugin page, we search for the plugin we need to install using the search field located at the top right of the page.

We enter the name of the plugin (WPS Hide Login) and press ENTER to start the search. This plugin should appear as the main search result. We must install it and activate it so it can be used.

Once the plugin is activated, we go to the section of our WordPress panel Settings -> WPS Hide Login. We will see that there is a field where we can specify the new URL we want to use to access the WordPress login. That is, we can change the default web address, which is /wp-admin, to a different one.

In this case, we will change the login address to /entrarpanel for example.

We must make sure to click on the Save Changes tab to store the URL in the database.

To test our new login address we will need to log out. To do this, hover the mouse over the username in the top right corner and select the Log Out option.

We will be redirected to the login page which, as can be seen and if everything went well, now has the new address. We can confirm this by checking the address bar of our browser.
