Pointing a domain to Shopify

A step-by-step guide to connecting your existing domain from a third-party provider to your Shopify store.

Updated over a week ago

Step 1: Connect Your Domain in Shopify

First, you need to tell Shopify which domain you want to connect.

  • Go to the sidebar in your Shopify admin and select "Online Store".

  • In the new sidebar that appears, select "Domains".

  • On this screen, select the option to "Connect an existing domain".

  • Next, enter the domain you have with your provider (e.g., Sered) that you want to use with Shopify and click "Next".

Shopify will now show a screen with instructions and a "Verify connection" button. Leave this window open in your browser; you will return to it later.

Step 2: Configure DNS Records

Now, you need to change the DNS settings at your domain provider.

Note: The following steps show how to do this in cPanel, which is used by many hosting providers, including Sered.

Access the Zone Editor

  • Open a new tab in your browser and go to your hosting provider's Client Area.

  • Access your cPanel account from the client area.

  • Once you are in cPanel, look for the "Domains" section and select "Zone Editor".

Manage Domain Records

  • On the next screen, your registered domains will appear.

  • Click on "Manage" next to the domain you want to point to Shopify.

Update the A and CNAME Records

You will now see a list of DNS records for your domain. You need to find and edit the main A record and the CNAME record. You should ignore other records like ftp.yourdomain.com, ipv4.yourdomain.com, or mail.yourdomain.com.

  • A Record: Find the A record for your main domain (the name is often your domain name or @). Edit this record and enter the IP address 23.227.38.65 in the "Record" or "Points to" field.

  • CNAME Record: Find the CNAME record that starts with www. Edit this record and enter shops.myshopify.com in the "Record" or "Points to" field.

  • Save your changes for each record.

Step 3: Verify the Connection in Shopify

Now go back to the Shopify window you left open earlier.

  • Click the "Verify connection" button.

  • The page will take a few seconds to load and will test the connection. If everything is correct, the domain will show as connected.

  • It is also important to configure the primary domain to be either with or without www. Make your selection and save the changes.

This completes the process of pointing your domain to Shopify.
